Do you know «steganorgaphy» this art of dissimulation?
Steganography, art of the dissimulation is used to hide something in an image, a sound, a file, etc...
Steganography does not originate from computing, instead it was first used in real life to transmit "hidden" information. It's been used for a long time since then, whether in antiquity, during wars, or even now. It's not surprising to find it in computer science, since all the tools lend themselves to it.
In I.T, steganography is not necessarily encrypted, but it always can. the goal is still discretion and dissimulation (And obviously, an encrypted message will attract more attention). However, regardless of the type of utilisation we can imagine for steganography, it is often used by malware developers. Indeed, a simple image may contain a script or code that can be used to download malware or malicious scripts from a distant server.
Malware hidden with steganography will be more difficult to detect with an antivirus or virus scanner, given that steganography greatly complicates the detection.
It has also often been used to conceal Trojans.
Software to conceal things using steganography is made available to everyone.
